After running the inaugural Observer Ethical Awards in association with Ecover in 2006 we were delighted to get the chance to try something different this year. While we loved the classical feel of LSO St Lukes, we needed to find a new venue for 2007 which would reflect the development of ethical issues and illustrate their rise up the UK political agenda. We were thrilled to be able to use The Hospital, a private members club in Covent Garden. Judges this year included Emily Eavis, Peter Duncan, David James, Krishnan Guru Murthy and Woody Harrelson while guests at the Awards ranged from ethical superstars like Katherine Hamnett and Laura Bailey to up and coming eco warriors like Danny Dyer and Alexa Chung.
The Awards were hosted by Simon Amstell who certainly proved that being green doesn’t mean being boring. Winners at this years event included Dr Caroline Lucas MEP, Al Gore, Sainsbury’s and Stratherrick Primary School near Inverness. After the Awards we had DJs from Global Cool and THTC to keep the party going in to the night.
We feel proud to have delivered an event which proved that style, substance and sustainability can go hand in hand. Inititiatives we introduced this year to make the event greener included Fairtrade rum cocktails for guests, recycled furniture from Reestore and low impact materials used for wall hangings.
Congratulations to all the winners - the 2008 Awards will launch next January so keep an eye on www.observer.co.uk/ethicalawards for more details.
