The inaugural Green Awards, rewarding creativity in sustainability, took place in November 2006 at the Guildhall, London. As well as the glittering ceremony itself, Seventeen managed the judging days, and as always ensured that sustainable practice was implemented at every step of the Awards.
Some of the sustainable elements incorporated into the Awards included:
…a “Green Carpet” to greet guests made from recycled material, supplied by InterfaceFLOR;
…low energy LED lighting to illuminate the grandeur of the Great Hall;
…stage banners made from low-impact recycled material supplied by Dickson Saint Clair;
…origami centrepieces instead of flowers;
…an “eco-taxi” booking service provided by Green Tomato Cars.
The stunning stage design was flanked by two unusual creatures provided by Anglian Water and Rivercare - giant metal birds! The two sculptures were made from disused shopping trolleys which had been rescued from local rivers.
The focus of the evening was of course the Awards ceremony itself, presented by “The Queen of Green,” Penney Poyzer. Among the big winners were Marks & Spencer, Good Energy, Transport for London, and O2, who claimed the first Green Awards Grand Prix for their environmentally friendly mobile phone packaging initiative. Congratulations to all the winners.
