Ethical Food Debate

Went to an interesting debate at the Garrick Theatre last night focussing on issues surrounding food in London – how to encourage households to prepare more food themselves rather than buying processed supermarket meals which are often high in salt and fat and pumped with additives. Ken Livingstone made some excellent points about the centralisation of UK government, particularly when compared to his peers abroad. Keith Abel from Abel & Cole was understandably sceptical about Tesco’s plans to provide their own organic vegetable boxes. By the end of the debate it was difficult to see any one, clear path forward on food policy at a local level – the big message seemed to be that change can only come either with a big stick from central government, or change on a personal level. Time to get back to the allotment…
