Grand designs – Eco Deco Design

The construction industry is a key player in producing vast amounts of carbon dioxide; lighting and heating buildings alone generates 50% of Britain’s emissions.   The production of building materials produces a further 10%; this is why I was intrigued to see on Grand Designs an art deco style eco house being constructed from Aircrete blocks.  I had never heard of these before but they are made from recycled by-products of coal burning power stations, fuel ash.  The manufacturing process is also environmentally friendly as the majority of waste material and energy created is recycled back into the process itself.  On top of this they also have excellent thermal insulation properties and are recyclable as aggregates.  I was then surprised to see that Celcon, the company who manufactures the blocks, have been making them since 1949! Clearly a step ahead of the green ethics that companies are slowly taking on board at present!
