Murderme

I went to see Damien Hirst’s private collection last night at the Serpentine. Not surprisingly, he’s collected a lot of his peers’ work: lots of Sarah Lucas, Banksy, Tracey Emin and Gavin Turk. Gavin gave a brief talk at the private view – wondering why he couldn’t afford to buy any of Hirst’s work. There’s also some impressive work from renowned artists such as Francis Bacon, Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol.

The theme of the exhibition is death, specifically Hirst laughing in the face of death. Almost all the pieces displayed left a smile on my face. I loved Steven Gregory’s set of seven skulls including, my favourite, ‘A nod’s as good as a wink’ made from a human skull and lapis lazuli. A pretty amazing collection all in all, but predictably, not for those of you who like to question ‘is this really art?’!
