On yer bike

Seventeen are getting on their bikes, by signing up with Cyclescheme, an initiative that encourages employees to cycle to work by offering tax free bicycles. You can choose any make of bike, from a huge list of local shops, and save anywhere up to 50% of the cost. That’s not to mention what you could save on tube fares and gym bills.

I’m a bit of a bicycle advocate myself, but not in the bicycle geek, all weathers kind of way. What London needs is to move towards a cycling culture more akin to that in Copenhagen or Amsterdam, where it is normal for everyone to cycle. Smart suited gents, ladies in heels cycling along with their handbag in their basket and their shopping on the back, people just pootle about their normal business. So, you’ll not find me turning up at the office in lycra. I’m sure it’s possible to be chic and cycle. Now all I need to do is find a new bicycle and a helmet that look the part.
