Vegan Monologues Part II

So it’s now been 14 days without an animal product or by-product passing my lips. To be honest it’s been pretty easy so far – an excursion to Wholefoods Market meant I discovered a lot of (expensive) meat and dairy substitutes. I’ve yet to find a decent cheese though, the options are called schmeese, cheesly or teese and taste like the dust at the bottom of a bag of cheese & onion crisps. But I have found a delicious vegan chocolate truffle from Booja Booja which is arguably better than the real thing.

So, on to my fact for the week which relates to water. It takes 1000 litres of water to grow 1 kg of wheat and 11,000 litres to grow feed for enough of a cow to make just one quarter-pound burger and between 2,000 and 4,000 litres for that cow to fill her udder with one litre of milk. That’s not a very efficient use of water. Alongside this, the meat industry contributes to water pollution from animal waste, antibiotics and hormones, chemicals from tanneries, fertilizers and the pesticides used to spray feed crops.
