Vegan wine

So it’s now February and my vegan resolution is still going strong. I’m not completely virtuous though, and have already fallen off the booze wagon with a few glasses of post event champagne. Worryingly, some wines and champagne are not vegan due to animal products being used in the production. Bits of fish, shellfish or egg albumen are sometimes used as a fining agent which removes proteins, yeasts and other particles before the wine is bottled.

Our friends at Vintage Roots do an excellent range of well priced vegan wines, and well known brands such as Kumala, Stowells, Peter Lehmann and Jacobs Creek seem to be doing a good job of avoiding fish bladders and the like. A quick check on veggiewines tells me that most champagnes are OK too. All except Krug – which my wallet as well as my conscience will ensure I avoid!
